Write about one of your biggest accomplishments in your teaching that no one knows about:
One of my biggest accomplishments was winning the SECAC award in 2011.
SECAC stands for Special Education Citizen Advisory Council.
While doing my first round on my administrative internship, I organized Disability Awareness Day at my school. I am especially passionate about this as my mom died from Multiple Sclerosis. She taught my sister and I to be advocates.
The day was filled with speakers, activities, and video clips and a large body of students were involved in the day. The kids also got to me service dogs too due to my principal making those arrangements.
Although I did not finish my internship that year and all my work was not counted toward the process, I was especially proud of that day. I was able to bring together a diverse group of students for a good cause. We have several special programs here to include Autism, Ortho, CRI, and a range of Special Education services to include both intensive and co-taught classes. These students interact with each other daily and sometimes there is insensitivity on both sides. I was glad to start the communication between groups of students.
The award was just the icing on the cake.
